Is Lake Garda worth visiting in autumn?
October and November in Garda Trentino: the real temperatures, what stays open, what closes — and the three things you find here in autumn and never in summer.
Yes, and for some things it is the best season of the year. The air dries out, the light drops, and the mountains around the lake are finally seen for what they are. Anyone who walks, climbs or cycles finds now the conditions they chase at dawn in summer.
The temperatures: October brings highs between eighteen and twenty degrees, clear days and cool evenings. November settles at twelve to fifteen, with mornings below ten. Lake water falls from eighteen to a little over ten: you look at it rather than swim in it.
What stays open.
Riva del Garda is a real town, with more than seven thousand residents and an old centre that lives all year. Shops, restaurants, bars, the museum in the Rocca, bike rentals: open.
The ferries change to the winter timetable, and some lakeside lidos close from mid-October. Sailing schools scale back in November without stopping: the wind is there, and the clubs keep training.
In the mountains, the higher huts close with the first snow, usually between late October and November. The low paths — Ponale, Monte Brione, the Sarca valley — stay walkable all winter.
Three things autumn has, and summer does not.
The olives. Garda Trentino is one of the northernmost olive-growing areas in the world, and the harvest begins in October. For weeks, on the terraces around Arco and on Monte Brione, you see the nets spread under the trees. This is when the new oil comes out, and it is something to taste rather than read about.
Quiet on the trails. The Ponale in October, on a weekday, is close to a private walk. The same goes for the crags and the greens.
The calendar. The Rock Master opens October in Arco. On 8 November the Garda Trentino Half Marathon runs along the lake. From mid-November the Christmas markets in Arco and Riva open, and the season turns again.
The November light.
There is a moment, around four in the afternoon, when the sun comes low into the basin and catches the walls opposite Riva. It does not last. Anyone who was here in August has never seen it, because in August at that hour the whole day is still ahead.
It is the kind of thing worth travelling out of season for.
Where you stay.
In autumn the centre of Riva counts more than ever: you walk out to dinner, you walk back afterwards, and you never think about where the car is.
And after a day outdoors at twelve degrees, the dry room for the gear and the Finnish sauna in the garden stop being a detail.
Common questions.
