Lake Garda in September: why this is the month
The water still holds around twenty degrees, the Ora rises every afternoon into October, and the centre of Riva breathes again. September and October, month by month, with the real temperatures.
Yes — and the people who come back every year worked this out long ago: September is when Garda Trentino is at its best.
The water stays around twenty degrees until the end of the month. The Ora, the afternoon wind, comes up on schedule and holds into October. And after the first week the streets of central Riva let go of the August queue: same light, same lake, half the people.
What the weather actually does.
The first half of September in Riva is still full summer. Days above twenty-five degrees, evenings spent outside without thinking about it, the cool air arriving only after midnight.
In the second half the air dries out. Mornings begin cool — fifteen, sixteen degrees at first light — and the afternoons stay warm. This is when the light changes colour and the mountains around the lake come into focus.
The water follows slowly. Around twenty degrees for most of the month, still welcoming if you like going in. In October it drops below eighteen, and the lake becomes something you go out on rather than into.
Rain is rare. When it comes, it lasts a few hours and you watch it arrive from the north, over the ridges.
The wind keeps its hours.
Garda Trentino has two winds with a timetable, and September does not change it.
The Pelér comes down off the mountain before dawn and holds until mid-morning: the wind of early risers, sailors and photographers. Then it drops and the lake goes glassy. Around noon the air turns and the Ora arrives from the south, steady until sunset — the one that fills the water between Riva and Torbole and decides what time you head out.
For anyone coming to sail or windsurf, September brings August's thermals with far fewer boards on the water. It is why the clubs put their serious regattas here.
The town opens out.
From mid-month the old town changes its breathing.
There is a table at the gelateria at five in the afternoon. You can eat dinner without booking three days ahead. The walk down to the harbour in the evening becomes something you do slowly, watching the black water and the lights on the Rocca.
Rentals, sailing schools, mountain huts and lifts all stay open. The only thing that closes is the crush.
What you do in September.
It is the month when everything that burns in high summer comes back to the right measure.
The Ponale path can be walked in the middle of the day, without waiting for shade. The Arco crags are climbable in the sun again, and the first days of October bring the Rock Master to Arco. Cycling finds the temperature it wants: you climb without suffering and descend without shivering. And the greens of Garda Trentino go through their finest week of the year.
From via Negrelli you walk out into the centre, and by car you are at the start of everything else within minutes.
Common questions.
Can you still swim in Lake Garda in September?
Yes. In the northern basin the water holds around twenty degrees for most of September and only falls below eighteen in October. The warm days in the middle of the month are often the best of the year for swimming: the lake is still mild and the shores are free.
Is there still wind on Lake Garda in September?
Yes, and it is one of the reasons to come now. The Pelér blows from the north in the early hours, the Ora arrives from the south around midday and holds until sunset. The thermal pattern stays reliable through September and well into October.
September or October in Garda Trentino?
September for the water and the evenings outdoors; October for walking, climbing and cycling, with clear air and colour in the woods. Come in September for the lake, in October for the mountains around it.
Does Riva del Garda close down after summer?
Very little does. Riva del Garda is a town that lives all year: shops, restaurants, museums and rental outfits stay open. Some lakeside lidos shorten their hours from mid-October, and the ferries move to the winter timetable.
